Hey Guys! We’re Sean and Kate!
IF you’re reading this post, it must be because you want to know a little more about us! We are both so excited to have the chance to share our journey with you all. But before that…we want to share a little bit about us. As we’ve said before, Kate and I are just two nurses trying to navigate our way as parents of twins. Yes, TWINS!
The Early Days…
Katelyn and I met one fateful day while working in the ICU, you could even call it love at first bed pan, plenty of pun intended there. We have been together for almost 7 years and married for 2. We have had plenty of ups and downs but have been each other’s rock through all of it. Through our experiences as nurses, we have met many challenges and overcome many obstacles. We both share a passion for helping people and have realized we could help so many more people by combing what we know as nurses and what we’ve learned as parents.
Wait, How Many Did You say??
Finding out we were pregnant was a real shock for both of us but we knew how great of a blessing it was. Fast forward 3 months later and we found out we were going to have double the blessings because we were having twins! We have continued to be thankful for those blessings everyday.
Then That Happened
Our pregnancy was pretty routine up until we went for one of our last checkups. Katelyn’s blood pressure was unusually high and she had protein in her urine. These can be signs of something called preeclampsia; a condition that is characterized by dangerously high blood pressures, visual changes, abdominal pain and swelling throughout the body. She was quickly admitted to the hospital where we had to wait and see if our babies were going to hold out until their due dates or meet us early.
Well, it turns out they were far too excited to meet this brave new world and came 5 weeks early, something the doctors had told us to prepare for but something you’re never really ready for. They were admitted to the NICU and we were able to see them anytime day or night but it was still one of the hardest experiences of our lives.
Teegan needed support for her lungs and was required to have something called CPAP which allowed continuous pressure to push oxygen into her lungs. Tenley on the other hand, required IV fluids that could only be accessed through a small catheter in a vein in her head. We were so focused on the girls, we failed to realize Katelyn’s blood pressure was continuing to become wildly out of control along with her swelling. By the time we caught it, she had to be transferred to a unit that would allow her to receive a higher level of care. It was during this time that she was unable to visit the girls which was worse than anything most parents could ever imagine. Katelyn improved greatly over the next 48 hours and our girls continued to be the little ROCKSTARS that they are.
Tell The World I’m Comin Home!
The girls improved so well over the next 10 days that they were able to be discharged home early (much of this I attribute to my wife who stayed by their sides for at least 12 hours a day)- cue the feelings of excitement, overwhelmed, scared, happy, elated, emotional and did I say overwhelmed??
Home…Now what??!
Once we were home, we quickly realized how ill prepared we were for this new adventure and turned to the internet to find as much information as we could, just as we had in the months leading up to the girls being born. Because of all the girls required once we were home, we decided it was best for Katelyn to stay home with them and not return to work as a Nurse Practitioner.
The first few weeks home were what Katelyn and I lovingly refer to as the “eight, eleven, two, five days.” This is a little joke between us in reference to our feeding schedule that we maintained from the NICU in which the little beans ate at the hours of 8, 11, 2, 5, and yes, that did indeed include both the A.M.s and P.M.s. We quickly adapted over the next couple months and fell into a routine that worked for us. We soon realized how much of a team effort it takes to raise infants. Much like the zombies from horror movies, except no brain eating and probably a few less brain cells for us, we slept walked through the nights, caring for the babies and attempting to meet their every need.
…But Why Isn’t All the Information Together???
It was during this time that we started to realize there is plenty of information out there spread amongst many different websites, blogs, etc., but none that truly had all the information right there in one place. So we started thinking… why can’t we be that place that helps others? Find and categorize all the topics we wished we would’ve known about. To us the answer was simple, we could be!
And So It Begins…
BAM! Life’s Twinning Adventures was born. We picked our name and the rest is history! We now chronicle this crazy, awesome, amazing, scary, overwhelming, extremely satisfying adventure all right here. We are getting through the hardest job we will ever have and CANNOT WAIT to help you too! We lived it and continue to live it right now and are excited to help you get through this amazing journey as well. So buckle up folks, cause its going to be a wild ride!
